Port Douglas

On our second to last day we spent the afternoon in Port Douglas. Situated about 50 minutes north of Cairns, 'Port', with it's marina full of luxury yachts, and beautiful Four Mile Beach (you have to swim inside the specially designed 'stinger'/box jellyfish enclosure, can you see it on the photo?)

is it's smaller and more sophisticated cousin. With boutique shops and hotels, glamorous homes (and home owners), intimate wine bars and crystal chandeliered (probably not a word) restaurants aplenty, style and elegance was exuding by the bucketload.

See!!!

One of the main landmarks and oldest building in Port Douglas is St Mary's by the Sea. Built in 1911, it was relocated to it's current idyllic location in 1988 and is the oldest building in Port Douglas. It is a non denominational church and, with it's glass altar view, is a popular destination for weddings. We were there on a Saturday and I would have loved to go in and take a peek, but there was a wedding party just arriving, and I don't really think they needed a random NZ sightseer popping up in all of their photographs - waving!

So we went for lunch instead. Overlooking the water, it was an amazing vegetarian burger, made with chickpeas and lentils and beans and spices. Definitely should have asked for the recipe.

After lunch we heard Bruno Mars, 'Marry You' playing in the distance. Surely they weren't getting married to that song. No, no, surely not. I must have been mistaken...

The view from Rex Lookout, on the stretch of coast between Cairns and Port Douglas. It is also a popular place for hand gliders (some of them look like they are floating around sitting in a big sock, how on earth do they land in those things?).

I have to tell you, I just googled hand gliding, and realised that it's not hand gliding, it's actually hang gliding, so my sincere apologies for the above error. Wow, you really do learn something new every day don't you?

Love
