A Whole Lot of Davids!

Did you know that there is not just one David in Florence but three?

There is a bronze replica in Piazza Michelangelo looking over the city for everyone to enjoy, just near our campsite actually!

There is another replica outside in Piazza della Signoria. This is where the original was until 1873 when it was moved to the Accademia Gallery.

And here is the original, sculpted in marble by Michelangelo between 1501 and 1504 and housed in Accademia Gallery. In the books it said we would have to book online for tickets to the Gallery, or be prepared for a long wait. We got there and sailed straight in - that is the beauty of travelling around off season, I am sure we have saved hours of queuing over our holiday!

I couldn't take a picture of the original unfortunately as they don't allow cameras. I did see a couple of people taking sly photos on their phones - is that a bit of a loophole do you think? Anyway, Here are a few I stole from the internet for your viewing pleasure.

Standing 5.14 metres high, it is a magnificent piece. There were pews all around it for people just to sit and enjoy. It was absolutely incredible and amazing just to be so close to such an iconic and brilliant artwork, I cannot believe it has been standing for over 500 years! There are monitors on the statue to gauge any kind of movement or cracking, as obviously even the smallest of earthquakes could affect it - I am very happy that it is in Italy and not NZ!

Absolutely a highlight for me. Could have just sat there and stared for hours - truly awesome!
