Eungella National Park

The next day, and back to another of the many wonderful Australian National Parks. This time, one we could not pronounce at all, the Eungella National Park, just an hour west of Mackay (pron. McEye) and Queensland's largest rainforest National Park, spreading over a massive 50 thousand hectares.

We drove to Finch Hatton Gorge for a walk to a waterfall and swimming hole. It was a bit damp though.

Would you cross? I didn't want to...

...neither did Gail and Marine from France...

...but Alex was brave, so Gail and Marine came with us.

Then up the big mountain to Eungella. We were warned that the gradient was steep, the bends were sharp and the corners were blind.

Would you drive up in a campervan? I wouldn't...

...but Alex was brave (and I was praying and crossing my fingers very tightly!), so up we went. We did have one hairy moment when the van just stopped dead, but luckily, we didn't roll back (this time) quick thinking Alex put the handbrake on and coaxed the van into an exhaustingly stressful hill start, and we were off again, chugging up at 5kph. Oh dear, you can imagine that was all a bit worrying!

We arrived at the top and I felt like I should have been riding six white horses, or wearing pink pyjamas or something, I was just so proud we had made it!

And then to Broken Hill River, to see what we had come to see. We asked a lady on the way, 'did you see one?' she said, 'ah, yes, the "special thing", it was very ugly' (she was from Belgium).

It was the Duck Billed Platypus!

They are pretty difficult to spot in the wild, as they are very shy creatures and are often only awake and frollicking in the very early morning or at dusk. We were so happy to see him, although I admit, and you may have already guessed, the above is not our photo, this is our one - but he was beautiful!

Benny and Naomi kept calling him Perry. They said, 'You know mum, Perry from Phineas and Ferb!'. I must admit I had never heard of Perry the Platypus, as I am normally vacuuming or cleaning or doing something 'very important' on the computer when the children are watching TV, so I just googled him for my, and for your clarification.

'Perry the Platypus, codenamed Agent P, is Phineas and Ferb's pet platypus who, unknown to his owners, lives a double life as a secret agent for the O.W.C.A (Organisation Without a Cool Acronym), a.k.a. 'The Agency', a government agency of animal spies.

It is currently unknown how Perry was recruited into the agency in the first place, or what kind of training Perry has undergone since he started receiving his missions.

For a platypus, Perry has above normal strength, speed, agility, stamina accuracy and reflexes, he can perform 'highly improbable judo maneuvers' and is master of Platyjitsu.

Perry is also able to pull a remarkable amount of items out of the air from behind his back. Where exactly these items are hidden is not obvious, as typically Perry does not wear clothes.'

"He's a Platypus, they don't do much".
- Phineas, when people ask what Perry can do.

Ahhhh, of course, now I see the similarity!
