La Sagrada Familia

Those of you who have been lucky enough to visit the wonderful city of Barcelona are probably surprised that I have not yet mentioned the incredibly talented world renowned modernist architect Antoni Gaudi. For the uninitiated, as I was 10 days ago, Antoni Gaudi was a genius. It has been a pleasure to visit La Sagrada Familia (The Sacred Family) Roman Catholic Basilica this week, as well as some of his residential projects and the famous Park Guell.

Antoni Gaudi started working on the Sagrada Familia in 1883, and he worked on it for an astounding 43 years until his death in 1926. For the last 12 of his life it was his only project and passion, he set up a model workshop and office underneath the church and he is now buried underneath the crypt.

Gaudi left detailed plans and drawings about every aspect of the church and the Basilica is still being worked on today, true to his vision. It is estimated that it will take another 20 years to finish completely, I think I would like to return in 20 years time to see it again!

And here is a picture of the roof of the Nave - exquisite!
